WHAT IS AN ELK DOG?

The Elk Dog is a Horse!  Horses were introduced to this continent by the Spaniards when they arrived in the middle of the sixteenth century.  Within the next two hundred years horses were aquired by almost every Native American tribe and had transformed life for the native people.  There is no Indian word for "horse", so because they carried burdens like a dog and were the size of the Elk, horses were called " Elk Dogs".  We have adopted this term for our training facility because we share the same values of respect for the horse as the Native people.  We admire the spirit of horses and seek to encourage the bond between horse and rider.
